Abstract

The current research aimed to explain the change of physical space and meaning of forest area in Phayap circle. The methodology employed in this research is a historical approach. This research found that the great change of forest area was the result of the production of colonial space by the Siamese government which was controlled by the state apparatus due to the forest concession given to the British private companies. Moreover, the forest area had changed from the mysterious area that was difficult to govern and not safe for living to the beautiful scenery and scenic bungalows of the Siamese elites and the westerners. Furthermore, some groups of monks played important role to shape the meaning of forest area, both local monks and monks who were sent by Siamese authority that made the forest area change dynamically.
