Competitive Disadvantages of Social Enterprises: Problems, Causes and Solutions

Abstract

The difference between social enterprises and others businesses can create issues and competitive disadvantages. It results in getting loss or closing down for some social enterprises. In order to acknowledge entrepreneurs to solve the problem and create competitive advantages therefore, this study aims: 1) to investigate the problems that affect the competitive disadvantages of social enterprise; 2) to analyze the causes of competitive disadvantages of social enterprise; and 3) to recommend the problem solving approaches for competitive disadvantages of social enterprise. 125 social enterprises were asked to participate in the survey questionnaire. In addition, respondents are composed of managers and staff of 5 social enterprises contributed in the in-depth interview. The results are as follows. The problems that causes the competitive disadvantages of social enterprise are management problem, marketing problem, personnel problem, and productive problem. The causes that lead to the problem of the competitive disadvantages of social enterprise are lack of organization resources, 2.2 lack of the effective managers, and staff. The techniques to solve the problem of the competitive disadvantages of social enterprise are: creating organizational values; using social capital; creating networks; applying of folk wisdom knowledge; creating awareness of an important of social enterprise; and supporting from the government.
