An Application of Buddhadhamma to Solve Gambling Behavior in Ban Non Khwao Community, Ban Lao Sub-District, Ban Fang District, KhonKaen Province

Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the factors influencing the process of gambling preventing and solving in Ban Non Khwao community, Ban Lao Sub-district, Ban Fang district, KhonKaen province; 2) to study the application of Buddhadhamma to solve the gambling behavior in that community. This qualitative research was conducted through the study of the relevant documents, fieldwork and in-depth interviews.
The research results indicate that: the factors influencing the process of gambling preventing and solving in Ban Non Khwao community were: family status, education, occupation, inspiration, environment, economics and survival. All are important factors contributing to the success of gambling behavior prevention and solution.
The Buddhadhamma used to solve the gambling behaviors in such community were: 1) Six Vices (Apàyamukha), 2) Aparihaniyadhamma (aparihāniyadhamma: things leading never to decline but only to prosperity), 3) Sammappadhāna, 4) Aññhaïgika-magga: the Noble Eightfold Path and 5) Pañca-sāla: the Five Precepts. These Dhammas should be practiced and applied to prevent the gambling problems in the community. This will lead the community away from gambling, to be safe, livable and serve as a moral community model.
