Abstract

The May 5, 2014 Chiangrai Earthquake caused damages to more than 10,000 buildings, most of them were small and non-engineering designed houses, localized in the affected area.  In addition, a number of reinforced concrete school buildings suffered heavily damages.  It was preliminary reported that intense damages were observed in some areas within 25 kilometers distance.  The affected areas consist of mixed terrains of flat plains and hills.  Local site effects of the area could play an important role in ground shaking characteristics of each site but such information had not been studied.  This research investigates the seismic site effects by microtremor surveys for site characteristics and ground response analysis.  Predominant periods and shear wave velocity of a site were obtained by H/V spectral ratio and Spatial Autocorrelation techniques.  Observations were conducted for 10 sites.  The predominant periods ranged from 0.2 to 0.7 seconds and the average shear wave velocities from surface to 30 m depth were about 220 to 400 m/s.  Site response analysis yielded spectral acceleration higher than 1.0g in the area within 10 kilometers from the epicenter.  Amplification characteristics and their correlation with damage distributions were discussed.  It was evident that damages of structures founded on relatively soft soil and located away from the epicenter were more severe than some areas situated on stiff soil and located in closer distance.
