Abstract

The purposes of this research, "The Making Process of Sakchai Guy's Saw Sam Sai", were to study the history of the saw sam sai creation, the making process of the saw sam sai, and the factors affecting the sound quality of Sakchai Guy’s saw sam sai. The problem of the saw sam sai lied in the fact that its sound was often drown out when being played with other musical instruments. By collaborating with the leading Thai fiddle makers, he, therefore; initiated an idea to develop and improve the sound quality of the saw sam sai to be more resonant and melodious. According to the study, the making of the fiddle sound box without the core attached to the stick results in the resonant sound quality. The
regulated pattern of the fiddle sound box’s frame designed to be curvy in order to be perfectly fit when being covered with a stretched skin results in more vibration of a stretched skin. Lacquer painting and gold leaf gilding inside the fiddle sound box resulting in the denser internal surface enhanced the resonance. The selection of a transparent and 0.15 mm thick stretched skin results in faster sound vibration. The pattern of covering a stretched skin in which the back of the fiddle sound box was uncovered allowed the fiddle sound box to utterly vibrate; therefore, the sound of the fiddle was louder and more resonant than the one in former times.
