Abstract

Abstract

This research is aimed to study the method of operation from Le Merle Noir (The Black Bird) for flute and piano composed by Olivier Messiaen. The main components included in this research are as follows: musical form, pitch and interval selections, Hindu rhythmic patterns, canon by the addition of the dot, augmentation and diminution, and performance technique.

This research has discovered that Le Merle Noir was written in unique Sonata form without the present of the recapitulation section. Messiaen selected an interval of an Augmented 4th within the hidden harmony which is played throughout the composition. Furthermore, he asked the flutist to play inside the grand piano (under the piano lid). The purpose was to use the natural occurring acoustics generated from the piano, giving the performance a distinctive sound. This technique was specifically used throughout the flute solo section. In conclusion, the composer has successfully executed every composition technique that occurred in this composition.
