A Model of Dementia Prevention in Older Adults at Taling Chan District Bangkok Metropolis

Abstract

The purposes of  the study were to explore self-care behaviors of  dementia prevention and  to develop model and guidelines of dementia prevention among older adults in Taling Chan community. Instruments were divided into 1) the general information forms and dementia prevention behaviors assessment 2) the focus group interview questions and model of dementia prevention in older adults. The results showed that the older persons in Taling Chan had overall good level of self-care behaviors regarding to prevent of dementia. A model of dementia prevention was developed from the focus group discussion, it can be concluded that there were 4 steps: preparation, action, follow up and development. For guidelines of dementia prevention were 6 items:  the control of risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, medication and food intake, social engagement, regularly activity participation, cognitive training, emotional control and community and family participation. There were statistically significant differences of  mean  knowledge before and after the training session among older adults (P< .01, t=19.78). Health professionals can use model and approaches of dementia prevention that encourage older adults and the community to participate in continuous and sustainable health care.
