Abstract

This research aims to analyze the development of the adventures of the main male characters as heroes in Thai classical literatures from the Ayutthaya to the middle Rattanakosin periods. The researchers analyzed 27 main male characters from 43 classical literary pieces. The results of the research can be concluded that in the early Ayutthaya period, the motifs of the adventures of the main male characters are both for themselves and for others. In the middle Ayutthaya period, the adventures of the main male characters are still for themselves as well as for others but more for themselves under various aspects than those in the early Ayutthaya period. Then in the late Ayutthaya period find only adventures for others. In the Thonburi period, there are only adventures for themselves. Notably, in the early and in the middle Rattanakosin periods, the motifs of the adventures of the main male characters are again for themselves and for others; however, the adventures are obviously found more in the early Rattanakosin period and more than those in the previous time. Meanwhile, in the middle of the Rattanakosin period, the adventures of the main male characters appear to be less due to the adaptation of Western performances into the classical literature resulting in a reduction of the characteristics of the classical literature. The classical literature has been popular since the Ayutthaya period. Moreover, the adaptation of the allegory into classical literatures along with the hidden morale in a melodrama literature type or in storytelling or in folklores. This upgrades literature and makes the adventures of the main male characters as heroes widely known up-to-now.
