Using Films to Develop English Skills : The Use of James McKernan’s Time Cycle Process of the Action Research Model

Abstract

The research was interested in adopting the idea for developing the English skills of
the students from Matthayomsueksa 2/3 class, Banphue Pittayasan School, Banphue
District, under Udon Thani Offce of Educational Service Area Zone 4. This research aimed
to investigate English teaching outcomes by using movies as learning media which affecting
the English skills of the student by using James McKernan’s time cycle process of the action
research model. Subjects were 43 Matthayomsueksa 2/3 students from Banphue Pittayasan
School, Banphue District, under Udon Thani Offce of Educational Service Area Zone 4, who
were studying at the second semester of the academic year 2010, retrieved by the purposive
sampling technique. They acted in three cycles and there were 8 steps in each cycle ;
namely, 1) identifying problem, 2) analyzing needs, 3) setting hypotheses for problem solution,
4) developing plan, 5) acting on plan, 6) evaluating actions on plan, 7) giving feedback, making
understanding and explaining and 8) making decision on further actions of the next time
cycle.
The results of the study were found that in developing English skills using the process
time cycle action research in the frst time cycle; most of the students were skill required
of development of 4 aspects. Therefore, the second time cycle was continued and most of
the students were found having greater English skills development and the number of the
students with poor English was reduced. Thus, the researcher pursued the third time cycle
and all students had greater English skills development.
