Abstract

This research aimed to study background and development of Pong Lang in Isan culture. The methodology includes reviewing of related research, surveying, observing, interviewing. Data are collected from 3 groups of 6 experts of Isan music, 6 of musicians, and 10 of the other. The analysis description is used for researching report. The results are that in 1957-1980 (B.C. 2500-2523) at the beginning of Pong Lang history, Pong Lang is developed from 1) Kro, which Isan people called Kroloor Kholo.It is a tool that is hanging at the roof of the cottage for eviction the animals. 2) It is a tool for telling time at the temple that is called Pong. 3) It is also a tool for signaling of animals such as cow and buffalo of the merchant. And it is developing from Pong Lang that is hanged on the back of buffalo and cow. Then after, in 1987-1994 is a prosperous term of Pong Lang. Songs for playing with the other Isan musical instruments are created and also for other performances such as dancing and solo. In the adaptation era of Pong Lang 1995-2017, it has the change and creation by having melody of Pong Lang’s song to create new songs for dancing and listening. The songs are created by the Isan music experts. They use the melody of Khaen, Morlam melody, and the imagine of nature to create the Pong Lang as a musical instrument that includes 6-15 of logs. At the moment, Pong Lang is developed in the shape, sound, and techniques for playing as the band, solo, and also for contemporary music.
