Abstract

Sexual harassment of Sida in Ramakien and the rape of Wantong in Khun Chang - Khun Paen lead to conflicts in the main plots of the two Thai classics. In the case of Sida, it is believed that she can maintain her purity despite the harassment of the lustful giant lord Tossakun because she is a reincarnation of Goddess Luksamee and a protege of arch deities. However, what is more important than these divine blessings is her steadfast fidelity to her husband, Phra Ram. As for Wantong, although being treated as a price-object of the fights between Khun Chang and Khun Paen, she still adheres to the social norms for a good wife. She forgives both of them despite being raped twice by Khun Chang after Khun Paen’s successful seduction of Laotong and during his imprisonment and being harassed by Khun Paen’s rape attempt after being forcefully brought back by her son from Khun Chang’s residence. Her conducts testifiy that she is a person of principles as much as of sensibility. She appreciates both men’s passions for her and sympathizes them for outrages against each other. Although her understanding and perceptiveness lead to her unfortunate death, they also reflect her virtue that was not less admirable than Sida’s. Both characters’ success in maintaining their principles of loyalty to their husbands indicates that their capabilities in withstanding the blow of fate were equally remarkable. Indeed, these two female protagonists prove that victims of sexual abuse should not also be victims of social condemnation.
