Abstract

This is a survey research on the costumes design of dance theses (focus on Thai dance only) by graduates of Srinakharinwirot University’s Faculty of Fine Arts between 2003 and 2007 from 62 theses. This research found that the costumes design of dance theses (focus on Thai dance only) relates with creative concepts, styles of dance, forms of costume, and elements of costume; The result can be concluded as following : About Creative Concepts, 14 form 62 dance theses are inspired by ritual dances (worship dances), which make it the most popular thesis subject (22.58%). About Style of dance ,the most popular style of dance are inspired by Thai folk culture (27 theses, 43%), by most dance theses using in 2 process of design, (1) Traditional costumes usually come in split pieces structure and (2) Applied costumes which use semi-ready to wear structure and also use material base on realistic concept and display the image of folk culture by using native woven textiles and ‘Pha-Yok’, an elaborated silk fabric with gold an silver thread woven into lustrous patterns. Color choices usually base on Thai archaic fashion that uses pairs of contrast colors such as ‘yellow and blue’, ‘red and blue’, and ‘purple and yellow’. Also, there’s clothe base on ethnic colors such as red, blue, black, and white. In traditional and applied costumes, they are in same shade and may use only one color (Monochrome) per the whole set costumes. About Accessories, traditional costumes consist of gold and silver adornments. This kind of costume emphasizes the use of motif, the accuracy of period, as well as ornaments that suit character’s status. For applied costumes, designers used pre-made ornament and preferred aesthetic over accuracy which have relationship in system, and also create the beauty and communicate principle meaning and information of performance through elements of costume.
