The Effects of Problem – Based Learning on Mattayomsuksa Thee Students’ Mathematical Reasoning Ability in the Mathematical Linear System
The research aimed to compare Mattayomsuksa 3 students’ (Grade 9) mathematical reasoning ability by using the problem-based learning and to compare the learning achievement of the students who received a problem-based learning. The samples in the research, selected by a cluster random sampling, are 46 students Mattayom3/12of Mattayomtrakanphuetphon School affiliated to the Secondary Educational Service Area 29 in the first semester of the academic year 2014. The research instruments consisted of 1) a problem-based lesson plan on the linear equation system; 2) a subjective test of five items on the students’ the mathematical reasoning ability, having a difficulty value ranging from 0.34 to 0.36, a discrimination value ranging from 0.66 to 0.72 and a confidence value being 0.89; 3) a multiple- choice achievement test of 30 items with a difficulty value from 0.22 to 0.71, a discrimination value from 0.21 to 0.69 and a confidence value equivalent to 0.87. Statistics used in data analysis were percentage, mean, standard deviation and dependent sample t-test. The research findings were as follows. 1) The reasoning ability of the students who studied the linear equation system through the problem-based learning activities was higher than before their learning with a statistical significance of .01.and 2) The learning achievement of the students who studied the linear equation system through the problem-based learning activities was higher than before with a statistical significance of .01.
