Abstract

Abstract
A two-group pretest–posttest design is a quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of a self-management promoting program on sleep quality among university students. The sample group of 112 subjects was assigned to control groups (n = 56) and experimental groups (n = 56) using multi-stage random sampling and match paired sample group was similar in studying year and faculty. The control group was received usual care by providing general knowledge about sleep and the experimental group was received eight-week self-management promoting program including self reflection, individual education, counseling, goal setting, action planning, and follow-up. The research instrument included 1) power point presentation 2) booklet and 3) goal achievement form. The instruments for data collection included 1) demographic data questionnaires, and 2) The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The instruments were assessed a content validity by three experts, and the reliability was evaluated via using Chronbach’s alpha coefficient (alpha = 0.75). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test statistics and inferential statistics to compare the differences of mean scores’ sleep quality (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, Mann-Witney U test). The results showed that the students in the experimental group had significantly increased sleep quality after participating in the self-management promoting program (z = -6.30, p<0.01) and had significantly sleep quality scores lower than that of the control group (z = -2.67, p<0.01). The recommendation is that the self-management program should be used to improve sleep quality in university students.
