Abstract

Objective: To develop the Thai version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) and explore evidences for the validity and reliability of the instrument.

Methods: This study was designed to develop and validate the Thai version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ). After conducting a forward-backward translation, the psychometric properties, i.e. internal consistency and convergent validity, were examined by comparing the instrument with the Thai-translated version of PHQ9 and SDQ. A total of 200 participants were recruited from parents who had 6 to 18-year-old child studying in a private school in Chiang Mai province.

Results: There were both significant positive and negative correlations between each subscale of the Thai version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire and the Thai-translated version PHQ9, as well as the Thai-translated version APQ. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for positive parenting practices, parental involvement, poor parental monitoring/supervision, and inconsistent discipline subscales were higher than 0.7.

Conclusion: The Thai version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating parenting problems.
