Abstract

A Survey Research of the Barriers toward Online Knowledge Sharing Intentions of Users in the GotoKnow.org Online Community

This study focuses on online knowledge sharing barriers toward online knowledge sharing intentions in the near future of the users in the GotoKnow.org online community. Data collected from 1,748 survey respondents and an exploratory factor analysis shows three factors of knowledge sharing barriers, namely, a community factor, an individual factor, and a technology factor. Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient shows that all factors negatively correlate with the online knowledge sharing intentions. The comparison of differences among the three user groups was categorized for online knowledge sharing and reading behaviors and analyzed by using the One-Way ANOVA. The results indicate that the lurkers and infrequent posters differ significantly compared to frequent posters in all barrier factors and the online knowledge sharing intentions, while the technology factor of lurkers differs significantly compared to infrequent posters. Additionally, seven out of twenty average ratings on the knowledge sharing barriers among lurkers are neutral or above. These results reveal useful information not only for reducing knowledge sharing barriers but also for encouraging lurkers and infrequent posters to share their knowledge in the future.
