Abstract

Osteoarthritis of knee (OA knee) is a common problem in the elderly. Resistance exercise using elastic chain can increase the strength of the thigh muscle in the elderly that can delay onset of OA knee. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an exercise with elastic chain and health behavior promotion on delaying osteoarthritis of knee in the elderly at Kudhae Subdistrict, Loengnoktha District, Yasothon Province. A quasi-experimental research on two groups of population - a control group (n=47) and an experimental group (n=47) was employed. Meanwhile, the experimental group was provided with a program for 12 weeks. The program included 1) providing knowledge about osteoarthritis of knee, 2) exchanging knowledge process with the role model, 3) demonstrating elastic chain exercises, and 4) following-up by home visits. The control group received normal care from health facilities. The data collection was administered by interviews and a Leg Dynamometer. The data were analyzed by inferential statistics of one - way repeated measure ANOVA and one - way repeated measure ANCOVA.

The results showed that at the baseline, strength of knee muscles, knowledge, awareness and osteoarthritis prevention behaviors of both control and experimental groups were not different. However, after 4th, 8th and 12th week of the experiment, strength of knee muscles, and scores on knowledge, awareness, and osteoarthritis prevention behaviors of the experimental group were higher than those of before the experiment (p-value <0.001), and they were higher than the those of the control group (p-value <0.001). In summary, the exercise program with the elastic and health promotion with the use of lessons learned from the role model, and home visits. This program can delay the onset of knee osteoarthritis in the elderly.
