Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive research was to study the relationship between working environments and nurses job satisfaction work – life balance among university hospitals in Thailand. The sample was 158 nurses who working in inpatient nursing departments at four  university hospitals: Prince of Songkla Hospital, Srinagarind Hospital, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Medical Center (Srinakharinwirot University) and Naresuan University Hospital. Research questionnaires were:-1) personal characteristics, 2) nursing work environment, and 3) nurses job satisfaction work – life balance. Reliability testing of nursing work environment and nurse job satisfaction work – life balance were done and computed using Cronbach’s alpha which were equal to 0.91 for overall score. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.


           The results indicate that 1) The working environments of nurses at university hospitals were in good level.                      2) Job satisfaction work – life balance of nurses at university hospitals is rated to be good. 3) The working environment was positively correlated with job satisfaction work – life balance of nurses at university hospitals. (r=0.498) ≤0.0001 level of significance.


            The study findings suggest that to maintain job satisfaction with respect to work – life balance, nurse administrators should promote the components that make up a good working environment. Namely, they should promote safety, provide adequate and appropriate resources and engage in strategic planning in related to human resource management. With these components in place, nurse might be more likely to enjoy a higher job satisfaction work – life balance which might have further positive effects on nurse’s retention.
