Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine the factors related to attachment between mothers and their hospitalized toddlers. Sample included 89 mothers of toddlers admitted in a hospital of Nakhonnayok province. Convenience sampling was used to recruit the sample. Research instruments consisted of the demographic record form and questionnaires related to the attachment between mothers and their toddlers, the child’s emotional behavior, the parent participation in hospitalized child’s care, and the social support. Chronbach’s alpha coefficients (α) of the questionnaires were .94, .85, .90 and .87 respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient.

Results revealed that emotional behavior, parent participation in hospitalized child’s care and social support were positive significantly correlated with attachment between mothers and hospitalized toddlers (r = .448, r = .479, and r = .463,      p < .01). These findings indicate that parent participation in hospitalized child’s care, child’s emotional behaviors, and social support affect attachment between mothers and hospitalized toddlers. Therefore, nurses should promote attachment between mothers and hospitalized toddlers, especially in children with appropriately emotional behavior by allowing maternal participation in child’s care and providing support to mother in order to build better attachment between mothers and their toddlers.
