Abstract

This study aimed to explore competency building strategies for oncology nurses and management situation for competency improvement for the nurses working at a cancer hospital under the Department of Medical Services. Results from this study would be used to tailor improvement strategies and pilot testing for feasibilities. The study was conducted in three stages: studying, strategy development, and evaluating competency improvement strategies of nurses responsible for the cancer care. Samples were 128 professional nurses and 16 nurse leaders and supervisors working at Ubon Ratchathani Cancer Hospital in 2017. The research instruments were questionnaire and interview forms. Statistics used to analyze quantitative data were percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis.

The research findings were as follows:

  1. Most nurses achieved expected competency level. The competency in cancer treatment skills were higher than the expectation. While the competency in providing nursing knowledge and technology were at the expected level, the competency in nursing research and development were under expected level. According to the survey for the needs and personnel potential development, training in the curriculum related to responsible performances using mentoring system was the most required method to be used in strategy development.

  2. Competency building strategies developed by this study included principle and driving strategies on the basis of ‘sharing’. The driving strategies consisted of 6 strategies including: 1) promoting technology and nursing innovation creation for cancer care; 2) developing communicative skills through modern technology; 3) promoting inspiration to improve nursing through learning and sharing; 4) supporting medical equipment to elevate nursing to the digital cancer hospital; 5) developing oncology nursing model in cancer care; and 6) enhancing ethical relations to improve quality of cancer treatment.

  3. Based on the evaluation of the strategies at Ubon Ratchathani Cancer Hospital, competency building strategies were feasible to implement at a moderate level in all aspects.
