Abstract

This research aimed to identify factors influencing health literacy among family caregivers of chronic disease patients in the community. One hundred and twenty family caregivers in Kanthararom district, Si Sa Ket province were recruited in the study by using the simple random technique. Research instruments were questionnaires about demographic information, media use, social support, and health literacy. Data was collected from April to May 2018. Descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used to analyze data.

The results revealed that health literacy among family caregivers of chronic disease patients was not at a good level (M = 61.37, SD = 12.72). The significant predictors of health literacy among family caregivers of chronic disease were education (b = .564), social support (b = .211) and age (b = -.187). These predictors could explain 58.6 % of variance in health literacy among family caregivers of chronic disease (R2 = .586, p < .001).

These findings suggest that nurses and other health care providers should apply these study results to develop interventions or programs to promote health literacy among family caregivers of chronic disease patients by focusing on education and social support.
