Abstract

This study was quasi experimental research by using two group pretest-posttest design which aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a health behavior modification program in overweight elementary school students through the participation of parents and teachers. There were 60 samples in the study. The sample were equally divided into the experimental group and the control group: 30 persons each. A simple random sampling method was employed to select the samples having similar gender, educational level and nutritional status.  The program was implemented for 8 weeks. The instruments used for data collection were the evaluation of knowledge of nutrition, eating and exercise behavior, the interviews of self-efficacy, eating behavior, exercise behavior and the evaluation of nutritional status. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired t-test, independent t-test and fisher’s exact test.                     The study revealed that 1) the mean score of knowledge after participating in the program of the experimental group was significantly different from that of before participating in the program (t = 4.73, p = .000). After participating in the program, the scores of knowledge the experimental group and the control group were different with no statistical significance      (t = 1.12, p = .267). 2) The mean scores of self-efficacy of the experimental group before and after participating in the program were different with statistical significance (t=4.67, p=.000).After participating in the program, the scores of self-efficacy of the experimental group and the control group were not different (t=-0.29, p=.772). 3)The mean scores of eating behavior of the experimental group before and after participating in the program were different with statistical significance (t=2.89, p=.007).The mean scores of eating behavior after participating in the program of the experimental group and the control group were not different(t=-0.34, p=.736). 4) The mean scores of exercise behavior of the experimental group before and after participating in the program were different with statistical significance (t = -2.47, p = .020).The mean score of exercise behavior after participating in the program of the experimental group was different from that of the control group with statistical significance (t = -3.76, p = .000). 5) The nutritional status of the experimental group before and after participating in the program was different with statistical significance (p = .000). The nutritional status after participation in the program of the experimental group and the control group was not different (p = .685).
