Abstract

This  qualitative research  , describe the perspectives of child-caregivers about their understanding of “normal growth in children” and diet preparation for child. The Informant were the people whose main responsibility was to obtain ingredients and prepare meals for children 0 – 5 years. They lived in the urban and rural areas of Mahasarakham province.  Collected data  by focus group and Indept interview. Content analysis was applied to describe the qualitative data. The results showed that child-caregivers had an inadequate understanding of optimal child growth. They misunderstood what good health means for a child. It was found that The caregivers were unaware of the importance of assessing a child’s height and weight and comparing to standardized growth and development information. This lack of knowledge can undermine the detection of a child's abnormal growth. Feeding  behaviors of caregivers children who were 0 - 5 years of age showed that they did not provide an appropriate type, sufficient amount, and adequate  status of children.  Healthcare providers should seek opportunities to provide information and support to child-caregivers.They should assist caregivers to understand the growth and development of children and help them to find easy ways to improve the nutritional status in children. With that, children can be appropriately fed according to their age and nutritional level.
