Abstract

Asthma in children is a chronic disease that affects the physical, mental, and social dimensions as well as the quality of life of children. Particularly, school-age children that, spend most of their time at school, need to heavily rely on themselves and teachers to care for their health. The present study is a two-group pretest/posttest quasi-experimental research that aimed to investigate the effects of a self-efficacy enhancement program on the asthma care behaviors of teachers at school. The sample of this research was composed of 50 teachers. The experimental group consisted of 25 teachers from the first school, while the control group consisted of 25 teachers from the second school. The control group was assigned to normally provide care for the students with asthma, whereas the experimental group was required to participate in the self-efficacy enhancement program focusing on children’s asthma care once a week for three times. The implementation of the program was tracked on a weekly basis for 8 consecutive weeks after participating in the program. The data regarding the asthma management behaviors of the teachers were collected using a questionnaire, which was already examined by 3 experts. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.90. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and  paired t-test.

The research results suggested that after 8 weeks the experimental group’s posttest mean score regarding the asthma care behaviors was higher than its pretest mean score at a statistically significant level (p < .01). In addition, the mean difference score of the asthma care behaviors of the experimental group was found to be significantly higher than that of the control group (p < .01)

The findings from this study indicated that the self-efficacy enhancement program can be used to effectively promote the asthma care behaviors of teachers at school. It is recommended that a long-term study should be conducted in order to further examine the persistence of asthma care behaviors and the effectiveness of such a self-efficacy enhancement program.
