Father involvement of first-time fathers in the postnatal period is important to health status of both parent and child physically, mentally and socially. The purpose of this predictive correlation research was to explore factors predicting father involvement among first-time fathers in the postnatal period. They took their wives to a postpartum check-up clinic and their child to the wellness baby clinic at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Health Promotion Center Region 1, Chiang Mai and Lamphun Hospital from March to May 2018. The participants were selected by conventional sampling following the inclusion criteria and consisted of 120 first-time fathers. The research instruments consisted of the Personal Data Record Form, the Father Involvement During Postpartum Period Questionnaire developed by Supakorn Chaina and Nantaporn Sansiriphun (2015), the Suanprung Stress Test-20 developed by Suwat Mahatnirunkul, Wanida Pumpaisalchai and Pimmas Tapanya (1997), the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale by Suwansujarid, Vatanasomboon, Gaylord, & Lapvongwatana (2013) and the Marital Relationship Questionnaire by Raojutitham (2006). Descriptive statistics and Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data.

Results of the study:

  1. 1. Father involvement in first-time fathers in the postnatal period was at a high level (85.83%) and mean score was 108.15 (S.D. = 10.09)
  2. 2. Marital relationship that was statistically significant can predict father involvement among first-time fathers in the postnatal period at 22.8% (p < .001)

Results from this study could be used as baseline data for planning effective nursing care to promote first-time father involvement in the postnatal period.
