The Community Spirits and Its Roles on Constructing Sacred Space in Sisaket Province

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study about the narratives that related to the spirits in each community. There are four ways of the sacred place construction in Sisaket Province. The first one is Guardian Ancestor Spirit Narratives that is still famous role in sacred place construction. The second one is Forest Spirit Narratives and the role in sacred place construction. The third one is Swamp Spirit Narratives. The last one is Hill Spirit Narratives. The research employs narrative and sacred place concept for analyzing data. The study revealed that in Sisaket Province there are different spirit narratives in each community. Guardian Ancestor Spirit is related to the community in the creation and maintenance sacred place, spiritual anchor and social control. Forest Spiritual Narratives which villagers respect for sacred place construction always have detail about animals that turn into sacred animals. Swamp Spiritual Narratives makes normal water resource turn into sacred place. In other words, it reflects water management system using Swamp Spirit Narratives as strategy. Hill Spiritual Narratives is about black magic and death of people in community. In other words, it is the negotiation between Buddhism and spiritual beliefs. All narratives stated above are part of power construction in defining geographical boundaries and turn it into a sacred place.
