The Historical Development of Chinese Migration Pattern and Routes in Mekong Sub-Region of Northeastern Thailand during the Late 20th- Early 21st Centuries

Abstract

This research aims to 1) study about the new patterns of new group of Chinese migrants and the development of contemporary history in the borderland of Northeastern Thailand during the contemporary period of late 20th- early 21st centuries. 2) study about factors and patterns that impact the expansion of this new Chinese migrant group. This research provided mixed methods between historical and sociological concepts to understand this phenomenon.

The outcome of this research found that 1) the development of new Chinese migrants to the Mekong sub-region and Northeastern Thailand during this contemporary period involved with the factor of the open policy of China to increase an encouragement Chinese to start up business in ASEAN countries.  2) The route and pattern of Chinese migration along the Mekong delta countries have created more towns from Southeastern, Southern and Central China. The main group of traders migrated from Guangxi and the route pattern has turned from sea route to land and air routes instead and this last factor has cultivated a new strategy to connect with Northeastern Thailand by using brotherhood tide strategy to connect the space of brotherhood towns in Isan communities of Thailand and relate the common and similarities in linguistic ethnicities between Zhuang and Isan language and culture.
