The purpose of this quasi-experimental research (pre-post test control group design) was to study the effectiveness of programs to educate, to modify the behavior of patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease stages 3-4 Mae-Moh hospital, Lampang province. The subjects were persons with patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease stages 3-4 Mae-Moh hospital. Seventeen subjects were simple random assigned to the experimental group and seventeen subjects were assigned to the control group. The programs to educate to modify the behavior of patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease stages 3-4. Four group activities were conducted at weeks 1, 3, 9, and 12. Moreover, two telephone calls were held at weeks 5, and 11. Four group activities composed of 1) food consumption behaviors’ assessment, 2) nutritional self-management training and reinforcement 3) reviewing nutritional self-management and reinforcement and 4) summarizing, the control group received nursing care as usual. The instruments consisting of 1) The instrument used for collecting including part 1 the personal data questionnaire, part 2 food consumption behavior questionnaires and part 3 Knowledge measurement model of kidney disease patients. 2) The instrument used in the experiment consisted of the program to educate patients with chronic kidney disease. The statistics used in data analysis were descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test and Paired-Samples t-test.
The results revealed that 1) The experimental group had significantly higher mean scores of knowledge and food consumption behavior than those in control group (p<.001) 2) After experiment, the experimental group had significantly higher mean scores of knowledge and food consumption behavior than before in experiment (p<.001).
The finding of this study can be used promote the development of professional nurses ability to educate patients about self-care of patients with chronic kidney disease, stage 3 - 4, to enable patients to understand and be able to change self-care behaviors.
