Abstract

This research aimed to study the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the factors relating to HRQoL in elderly people with permanent pacemaker. The sample group is a hundred and eleven of the elderly people receiving care in out-patient department, Cardiovascular Medicine Unit of  the Police General Hospital and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. The instruments were composed of demographic information, treatment information, Assessment of QUAlity of Life and RELated events in long – term pacing (AQUAREL), New York Heart Association Classification (NYHA), Thai Geriatric Depressive Scale, and social support questionnaire . Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson correlation coefficient and Eta coefficient.

The results showed that total score of the HRQoL in elderly people with permanent pacemaker was at a good level with 97.3% (Mean = 32.46, SD =10.42). Gender and age were not related to HRQoL (p> 0.05). Depression, co-morbidity, and limited of activity were significantly negatively related to HRQoL of the elderly people with permanent pacemaker at 0.05 (r = - 0.239, - 0.518 and r = - 0.697, respectively). Social support is significantly positively related to HRQoL of the elderly people with permanent pacemaker at 0.05 (r = 0.452). Co-morbidity, limited of activity and social support explained 61.2% of variance in quality of life in elderly people with permanent pacemaker.

The finding suggests that health personnel should provide health promotion for elderly people with permanent pacemaker in order to reduce limitation of activity. They should also prevent or minimize elderly people’s co-morbidity and provide well social support to enhanced better quality of life.
