A Development of an Active Learning Model that Promotes Thinking Skills in a Professional Teachers Course Managing for Students of the Faculty of Education of Phetchabun Rajabhat University

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study, construct, try out, and evaluate the implementation of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills in a professional teachers course managing for students of the faculty of education of Phetchabun Rajabhat University. The research framework was as follows: the population of the study was 60 first-year students from 2 sections, majoring in general science at the faculty of education, Phetchabun Rajabhat University, studying in the first semester of academic year 2017. By using cluster random sampling, the samples of this study were 30 first-year students majoring in general science at the faculty of education, Phetchabun Rajabhat University, studying in the first semester of academic year 2017. The data resources included the literature relating to the concepts of the active learning model development, an active learning model that promotes thinking skills, a project evaluation, experts having an experience in higher education, experts having an experience in teaching a professional teachers course in the education curriculum from the Northern Rajabhat universities group, and students of the faculty of education at Rajabhat university. The research instruments were an interview form of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills, an interview form of the active learning that promotes thinking skills, a questionnaire relating to the guidelines of learning management that promotes thinking skills, a focus group record form, an evaluation form of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills, an evaluation form of the professional teachers course handbooks, a thinking skills test, an interview form of the implementation of the active learning model, a questionnaire of the implementation of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills, and a questionnaire of the opinion towards the implementation outcome of the active learning model. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test dependent, F-test, and content analysis. The findings were as follows:


  1. Regarding the study of the development of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills in a professional teachers course managing for students of the faculty of education at Phetchabun Rajabhat University, the literature analysis, interviews and questionnaires yielded guidelines of making the outline of the development of an active learning model that promotes thinking skills which consists of 3 steps: Pre-learning step, learning step, and Post-learning step.

  2. The active learning model that promotes thinking skills in a professional teachers course managing for students of the faculty of education at Phetchabun Rajabhat university consists of 5 steps, namely Preparing and reviewing pre-existing knowledge (P), Organizing cognitive activities (O), Studying and collecting the data with diverse learning resources (S), Summarizing the knowledge (S), and Evaluating works (E). or called POSSE model From the quality examination it revealed that the model was extremely appropriate both in respective aspect and in the overall.

  3. Regarding the try-out result of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills in a professional teachers course implementing with the samples, it indicated that students’ thinking skills after learning was higher than before learning at the significant level of .01. The result from the study of the developed 5 steps by interviewing students indicated that the sequence learning management help understand the lesson contents better, thinking skills derived from doing activities by themselves and cooperatively drawing the conclusion by using the mind map. After implementing the active learning model, the students’ opinion towards the active learning model was at high level.

  4. Regarding the result of the implementation evaluation of the development of the active learning model that promotes thinking skills in a professional teachers course, in terms of reaction evaluation aspect, it revealed that the students’ opinion towards the model implementation was at high level. When analyze the learning evaluation aspect, it was found that the students have learned how to plan before having authentic practice in order to sequentially solve the problems which this could lead to having critical thinking consequently. In terms of behavior evaluation, the result showed that the students’ self-responsibility as well as responsibility towards others has become higher. They were more open-minded. Before completing the works, the students have planned beforehand and assigned the works among the group members. In terms of results evaluation aspect, according to the administrators, lecturers of professional teacher division, lecturers of professional teacher course, open-ended questionnaire, and interviews, it was found that the developed active learning model could be practically applied to learning management in professional teacher division, faculty of education, Phetchabun Rajabhat University.
