Abstract

Objective: To determine risk factors of canine rabies in Maha Sarakham province during 2014-2016.

Materials and Methods: The case-control study of risk factors of canine rabies in Maha Sarakham province during 2014-2016 was conducted by administering 108 questionnaires for descriptive and analytical epidemiology.

Results: The study indicated that spatial distribution pattern was a random distribution at the central part of the province. The total epidemic area was 1,004.31 square kilometers. The average distance between an incident spot to the nearest was 2,194.68 meters (between 14.11 - 17,279.16 meters). The new comers or stray dogs in a community (OR=5.31, p-value<0.01) and the dog having bitten by other dogs (OR=6.29, p-value<0.05) within one month prior to rabies occurrence were the risk factors.

Conclusion: The community network of rabies surveillance and strengthening the knowledge of rabies prevention and
control is recommended.
