บทคัดย่อ

บทความวิจัยนี้ศึกษาภาพสะท้อนประเด็นปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมและแนวทาง แก้ไขที่ปรากฏในวรรณกรรมสำหรับเด็กของเท็ด ฮิวส์ เรื่อง The Iron Man (1968) และ The Iron Woman (1993) ผู้วิจัยมุ่งวิเคราะห์วรรณกรรมด้านบทบาทของวิทยาศาสตร์และมนุษยศาสตร์ในการรับมือกับปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมร่วมสมัย Worster (1993) เสนอว่าความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อฟื้นฟูสิ่งแวดล้อมเชิงกายภาพ ในขณะที่ด้านมนุษยศาสตร์มุ่งสร้างความตระหนักถึงประเด็นปัญหา บทความนี้เสนอว่าวรรณกรรมสำหรับเด็กของฮิวส์สะท้อนบทบาทของสองแนวทางที่ส่งเสริมกันมากกว่าแยกออกจากกัน บทความนี้ยังวิเคราะห์ถึงแนวทางการนำวรรณกรรมของฮิวส์ไปใช้ในชั้นเรียน Kerridge (2012) เสนอทวิลักษณ์ระหว่างจินตนาการกับความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์ว่าเป็นหนึ่งในข้อท้าทายของการเรียนการสอนวรรณกรรมสิ่งแวดล้อม บทความนี้เสนอว่า วรรณกรรมของฮิวส์สะท้อนความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์กับจินตนาการเพื่อเสนอทางออกให้กับปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม The Iron Man สะท้อนภาพปัญหาขยะโลหะล้นเมืองซึ่งเป็นผลจากความเจริญทางวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี วรรณกรรมเรื่องนี้แสดงประสิทธิภาพของเทคโนโลยีการรีไซเคิลว่าสามารถแก้ปัญหาขยะโลหะล้นเมืองได้ แต่ในช่วงกว่าสองทศวรรษถัดมา ฮิวส์เขียนเรื่อง The Iron Woman โดยเสนอให้เห็นว่าวิทยาศาสตร์เทคโนโลยีไม่เพียงพอกับการจัดการปัญหาขยะสารเคมีจากโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมและจากแหล่งกำจัดสารพิษใกล้ชุมชน บทความนี้วิเคราะห์วรรณกรรมของฮิวส์เพื่อชี้ให้เห็นความสำคัญของการร่วมมือกันระหว่างความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์และมนุษยศาสตร์ในการสร้างความตระหนักถึงประเด็นปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม
