This study will examine four aspects of the lovers in George Sand’s Indiana (1832), Valentine (1832), Lélia (1833) and Leone Leoni (1835): the creation of the relationships, the environments in which they take place, the types of love that are involved, and the eventual outcomes of the romances.

George Sand reflects her own life in her novels. Her romantic characters are derived from living persons surrounding her. Sand was the victim of social injustice from birth: her parents came from different backgrounds, and throughout her life she was tyrannized over by her mother and grandmother. Her married life proved to be disappointing. Eventually, she tried to solve her problems through suicide. Sand’s novels retrace these elements in various episodes. In the four novels studied here, Sand presents the tragedies of romantic life with emphasis on the sufferings of women in marriage, which she believes originates from a society ruled by the power of money and interest. They seek their true loves outside of their marriages. Love will be studied in two aspects: unrequited love and reciprocal love. The former exists in the cases of Indiana, Juliette, Raymon, Leoni, Lélia, and Sténio. The latter is illustrated in the friendship between Indiana and Ralph, Valentine and Bénédict, and Athénaïs and Valentin. Society is shown by Sand to reinforce the impossibility of love. The amorous characters try to escape from social prejudice by exile and death: Indiana and Ralph are the only couple who live happily in exile from society, whereas the relationships of Valentine-Bénédict and Lélia-Sténio end in tragic deaths.

George Sand creates a powerful emotion when she describes the impacts of social prejudice on her romantic characters. She expresses infinite genius in her novelistic creations. Due to these qualities, Sand has become one of the greatest French writers of the past centuries.
