Abstract
English is the world’s medium language containing a long history and continuous evolution. This article was aimed to present the history and evolution of the English language in various periods as well as factors affecting language changes. The contents were categorized into three periods : Old English, Middle English and Modern English. Also, the main historical events and social phenomena that have played a pivotal role in changing and determining some specific characteristics of the English language in each period were presented in order to provide readers with a better understanding about the origin of change and evolution of the language.
