The Effects of an Application Based on Protection Motivation Theory and Social Support in Behavior Modification for AIDS Prevention of Conscripts in Nakhon Ratchasima Province

Abstract

This quasi experimental research aimed to study the effects of protection motivation theory applying program and social support on behavior modification in AIDS prevention of conscripts, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The samples were selected by criteria and simple random sampling were 72 conscripts and divided into 2 groups; an experimental and comparison group, each group were 36 conscripts. The experimental was group received the intervention with 6 times of activities and follow up to 4 times by social support in 10 weeks. Activities were integrated of group lectures, role playing, playing game, condom demonstration, condom training with model and counseling service. Data were collected by questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistic: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics were as independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test, at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed after the research, the experimental group gained significantly higher mean scores in AIDS knowledge, attitude about AIDS than the comparison group, perceived severity of AIDS, perceived susceptibility of AIDS, perceived self-efficacy of AIDS, perceived outcome expectation of response self-efficacy of AIDS, practice on AIDS prevention and condom using were significantly higher than before the experiment and higher than that the comparison group (p < 0.05). Recommendation; it should be motivated the commanding general and military coach to be social supporter on the conscripts in behavior modification prevention of AIDS.
