Abstract:

Pain is a common and complex problem in older people. Pain management includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Ageing process alters effect of medication in older people, which is different from other aged groups. Multiple morbidities lead to poly-pharmacy, contributing to higher risk of drug interaction. Pharmacological management for them requires special consideration to prevent or minimize adverse effects. Nurses should make understanding of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches in caring for older people with pain. This article focuses on pain management and application of nursing process for guiding nurses to care and manage pain in older people comprehensively and effectively.
