Abstract

The qualitative phenomenological research aimed to study nurse’s experiences of “a good death” in caring for patients at the end of life. Informants were 12 registered nurses, who experiencing in care for end of life patients until. In-depth interviewing, non-participant observation and note taking were applied for data collection. Data were analyzed by referring to the method of Diekelmann and were checked for trustworthiness by using the criteria of Lincoln and Guba. The results of the study showed that the definition of “a good death” as reflected by the nurses with end-of-life-care experience could be divided into nine themes: 1) comfortable death; 2) death after receiving all aspects of end-of-life care; 3) death amongst beloved people; 4) death without worry; 5) death in a favorite place; 6) death with awareness; 7) death having prepared beforehand; 8) death with the honor of the individual maintained; and 9) death wherein the family can accept one’s death. The findings of study reveals a body of knowledge concerning of nurse’s experience of good death and encourage nurse to be with, and provide palliative care for, dying patient and families.
