Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to study problems and needs of stroke patients and caregivers at a primary care unit. Data were collected by using interview questionnaire, interview guidelines, focus group discussion and workshops. Content analysis was used for qualitative data analysis. Results showed that stroke patients had problems of all domains: physical, psychological & emotional, social and economic. Their needs included: a person who prepares food for them; health care providers to deliver home medicines. They needed to
receive knowledge and advice for the disease. Stroke patients also need psychological support, understanding, love, counseling, financial support, residence, and wheel – chair. They need persons who could take them to
visit physicians. Moreover, they also needed health care providers to visit them at home. For caregivers, they also had problems in all dimensions: physical, psychological & emotional, social and economic. They need to be healthy, and had enough time for relaxation and sleeping. They also need to receive counseling and emotional support. They need financial support, house reparing, and transportation support when they take patient to see a physician. Caregivers also need home visit from nurses. Finally, they need physical therapy and rehabilitation center in the community.
