This comparative study aimed to investigate the outcomes of the utilization of extubation practice guideline on extubation success, duration of intubation and length of stay in ICU. A purposive sample of 205 medical patients in ICU was recruited for this study, 92 in the retrospective group received a usual guideline and 113 in the prospective groups received the evidence-based guideline. The findings showed that the extubation success between the 2 groups was not significantly different in the patients aged less than 60 years old. Furthermore, duration of intubation and length of stay in ICU between the 2 groups were significantly different (p=.000, p=.014 respectively). For patients aged over 60 years old, extubation success and length of stay in ICU between the 2 groups were not significantly different. Nevertheless, duration of intubation between the 2 groups was significantly different (p=.000).
