The Promoting Self-Efficacy Program on Breastfeeding Among Mothers of Preterm Infant

Abstract

Background: This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of promoting self-efficacy program on breastfeeding among mothers of preterm infant.

            Methods: Through purposive sampling, 20 dyads of mothers and preterm infant who were admitted to an intermediate care and special care nursery at tertiary hospital in North East. Data were collected April to August in 2018. The samples were divided into a control group (n = 10) receiving the usual nursing care, and experimental group (n = 10) participating in the promoting self-efficacy program. The research used the self-efficacy theory of Bandura as a conceptual framework of the study. Data were collected by using the mothers’ breastfeeding self-efficacy questionnaire and the breastfeeding behavior questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Signed-rank test.

            Result: The study findings revealed that The mothers’ breastfeeding self-efficacy scores were statistically higher than that in the control group (p < .05) and The breastfeeding behavior scores were statistically higher than that in the control group (p < .05)

            Conclusion: Nurses and related health personnel could apply this program to the routinely nursing practice for promoting the success of breastfeeding in preterm infant.
