The Influences of Perceived Severity, Social Support, and Uncertainty in Illness on Health Status of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract
Design: Correlational predictive research.
Methods:
The study sample consisted of 85 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who received treatment at the respiratory disease unit, and outpatient department, Chest Disease Institute, Nontaburi Province. Data were collected through 5 instruments: a demographic characteristics questionnaire; a perceived severity assessment questionnaire; the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support; the Mishel Uncertainty Inventory Scale; and the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis.
Main findings:
The results revealed that there was no relationship between perceived severity and uncertainty in illness (r = - .1, p > .05); that social support could predict uncertainty in illness by 9.4% (R2 = .094, p < .05); and uncertainty in illness could predict health status in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by 9.3% (R2 = .093, p < .05).
Conclusion and recommendations:
Based on the study findings, it is recommended that guidelines be devised to promote social support to reduce uncertainty in illness regarding ambiguity and unpredictability so as to enhance the health status of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
