The Effect of Reminiscence Program on Self-Esteem in Hospitalized Elders with Chronic Diseases

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of reminiscence program on self-esteem of hospitalized elders
with chronic disease. The quasi-experimental study, two-groups pretest-posttest design. Participants comprised
49 elders with chronic disease who were admitted in hospitals. The participants were selected by inclusion
criteria and match pair. Instruments used for data collection consisted of 1) demographic data questionnaire; and
2) self-esteem questionnaire; A reminiscence program based on conceptual framework of Hamilton and review 

literature. The program included one session per day for five days and each session took 45-60 minutes.
The reliability of the self-esteem questionnaire was tested using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding the
value of 0.86 respectively. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.
The hospitalized elders with chronic diseases in the experimental group had significantly (t =15.59,
p <0.001) higher mean score of self-esteem than in control group. (t = 4.04, p < 0.001) and the hospitalized
elders with chronic diseases after participating in reminiscence program had significantly higher mean score
of self-esteem than before participating in reminiscence program (p < 0.001)
Reminiscence program could increase self-esteem of hospitalized elders with chronic disease.
Therefore, nurses should use this program to enhance self-esteem of hospitalized elders with chronic disease.
