Prevalence and factors related to stress in undergraduate students, a north-eastern province in Thailand

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate prevalence of stress and factors related to stress in undergraduate students in a province in Thailand. Participants were selected using multi-stage random sampling contained 257 participants. Stress assessment tool was used to evaluate level of stress and general information was used to collect general data. Adjusted Odds Ratio with 95% confidence interval was used to explore the relation between independent variables and stress status.

The results showed that prevalence of stress was 49.3%, mean stress score was 17.99 out of 60. Female had higher prevalence of stress than male with 95% significant difference (53.9% VS 31.8%). Risk factors for stress were female, age 18-19 years old or 23 years old or more, higher grade point average, and insufficient money with aOR 4.19, 4.55, 3.34 and 3.60 respectively. Protective factors for stress was faculty of education compared to the faculty of humanities and social sciences with OR 0.29.

The results suggest that surveillance and stress program should be considered due to high prevalence and risk groups must be aware and focused to prevent stress or reduce stress in the future.
