Factors Affecting Burden among Caregivers of Patients with Schizophrenia in Sakaeo Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital

This predictive correlational research aimed to examine burden and factors affecting burden among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. The samples consisted of 100 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia who took the patients for treatment at Sakaeo Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital. The research instruments were composed of a questionnaire of individual characteristics, a test of knowledge towards caring with the reliability of .76, an assessment form of perceived self-efficacy with the reliability of .84, an assessment form of family relationship with the reliability of .96, and an assessment form of burden with the reliability of .87. Data were collected from June to August, 2015. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and stepwise multiple regression.
The research results revealed that 1) the mean score of burden among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia was 49.86 (SD = 12.79); 2) age, perceived self-efficacy, and family relationship were negatively statistically significant associated with burden among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia (r = -.220, p < .05; r = -.240, p < .05 and r = -.290, p < .01, respectively); and 3) age and family relationship were statistically significant accounted for 12% of the variance for burden among these caregivers (adj. R2 = .120, p < .001). The most significant predicting factor was age (Beta = -.228, p < .05) followed by family relationship (Beta = -.222, p < .05).
This research suggests that health care providers should enhance capabilities among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia emphasizing family relationship promotion in order to reduce burden. Additionally, nursing instructors should teach their students regarding factors affecting burden among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia.
