Factors Correlated with Perception toward 21st Century Learning Skills among Nursing Students, Phrapokklao Nursing College

Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to examine factors correlated with perception toward 21st century learning skills among nursing students. The samples consisted of 509, 1st-4th year nursing students studying at Phrapokklao Nursing College, Chanthaburi, 2nd trimester, in an academic year of 2015. The research instrument was a 3-part questionnaire that comprised demographic data, factors correlated with 21st century learning skills with the reliability of .88, and 21st century learning skills with the reliability of .95. Data were collected in March, 2016. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Spearman’s rank correlation.

The research results revealed that most of nursing students had mean scores of perceived characteristics of insructor, characteristics of learner, environments, curriculum administration, and learning-teaching methods together with all of 21st century learning skills at a good level. Perceived characteristics of insructor, characteristics of learner, environments, curriculum administration, and learning-teaching methods were positively statistically significant correlated with perception toward 21st century learning skills (p < .001).

This research suggests that nursing insructors should manage learning and teaching activities that enhance 21st century learning skills among nursing students, especially reading, writing and arithematic skill as well as creativity and innovation skill. Additionally, the administrators should promote teaching techniques for insructors in order to enhance 21st century learning skills among nursing students.
