Abstract

Orem’s self-care theory has been widely used in nursing profession and this theory has been applied to nursing practice, education, and research.  Orem’s self-care theory is composed of three involved theories including self-care theory (the explanation of self-care ability and self-care demand), self-care deficit (the explanation of imbalance of person’s ability and the need of all self-care which needs help for nursing) and the theory of nursing system (the explanation of help for a person to be able to continuously self-care in order to maintain life, health, and well-being in each person) self-care for patients with heart failure is also an essential health problem impacting on patients’ quality of life. Patients with heart failure need continuous care in order to prevent exacerbation and various complications when discharging home. Appropriate knowledge given will help decrease complications and re-admission to the hospital. Self-care should be emphasized and promoted self-care ability for proper behavioral adaptation. Nurses’ roles, thus, are important in caring patients with heart failure, specific to health promotion for self-care ability. Additional to knowledge given, advice, counseling, inspiring, and coordinating for patients who have been already diagnosed with heart failure is crucial for nurses to promote participation for effectively treatment and self-care.
