The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experience of success in management of head nurses at a tertiary care hospital under the Ministry of Public Health in Nonthaburi province. Informants were 15 head nurses who were awarded as the most outstanding in nursing administration. They were recruited by purposive selection. In-depth interviews were conducted for collecting data. All interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed. Then the contents were analyzed by using Colaizzi analysis.
The result revealed that head nurses who were awarded as the most outstanding in nursing administration have experienced for success in management as follows: 1) Human resource management and development, encouragement, teamwork building, flexibility, regulation, justice and transparency 2) budget management 3) material management and 4) planning/policy management by planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating. Informants also addressed factors which were problems and obstacles of management of head nurses. These factors were as follows: human resource, budget, material, and patient service. Successful in nursing management must compose of human preparing, readiness in management, and leadership.
