Abstract

Background: World health organization reported that the global diabetic patients was 171 million in 2000 and estimated increase to 366 million in 2030. International diabetes federation reported that the global diabetic patients was 415 million in 2015 and estimated increase to 642 million in 2040. In Thailand, prevalence of diabetic patients increases from 2.3% in 1991 to 6.9% in 2009 and 15 years after diagnosis reports 2% develop blindness and 10% develop vision problem.


Objective: This study reports the coverage of diabetic retinopathy screening and prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in Public Health Regional Service Provider 6th, Thailand 2016.


Materials and methods: Retrospective descriptive study.


Results: In this study total diabetic patients were 191,776 and 85,786 (44.73%) was registered to screening diabetic retinopathy. Rayong Province had the highest coverage of 73.54% diabetic retinopathy screening. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was 14.48%. Most of diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients were non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) (12.16%) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) (2.00%). Chonburi Province had the highest prevalence of diabetic retinopathy patients (25.80%).


Conclusion: Diabetic retinopathy is common a diabetes complication. It is a leading cause of visual problem. The screening of fundus in diabetes patients can decrease prevalence and complication of diabetic retinopathy. Because it can detected and treated in early stage of diabetic retinopathy.
