The Evolution and Future Trends of Halal Standard Development and Halal Certification Process in Thailand

Abstract

The objective of this qualitative research is to study and analyze the development of Halal standard and certification process of Halal products in Thailand. The major elements of Halal operations and management that create trustworthiness and confidence of Thai Halal products from consumers worldwide is also thoroughly considered.

Major findings of the research are that Thailand started the Halal certification process since 1949 by Sheikhulislam and the first Halal certification mark was officially issued since 1995 by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand After the Royal Act of the Administration of Islamic Organization B.E.2540 was promulgated, the Halal management affairs mission has been the full authority of the Central Islamic Council of Thailand and the Provincial Islamic Committees. As a part of “Thailand as Kitchen of the World”, the Royal Cabinet resolution then established Halal Standard Institute of Thailand and Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University to strengthen the Halal certification process. Since then the integration between Islamic organizations and Halal science academic institute with major guiding principle called “Religious Compliance Certifies and Halal Science Supports” led to the growth and development of Halal standard and certification in line with International Halal standard. Hence, the positive consequence are the setup of structure and process of Halal certification, Halal management system in business enterprise, Halal production process throughout supply chain, human resources development and the unification of the halal certification bodies throughout the country. With one single Halal certification mark accredited by the Central Islamic Council of Thailand create assurance and trustworthiness of the consumers worldwide.
