<b>ทวิวัจน์ข้ามชาติ: กรณีศึกษาเชิงอัตชีวประวัติทางวิชาการ</b><br> Cross-Cultural Dialogue: Case Studies from an Intellectual Autobiography

บทคัดย่อ

The concept of “dialogue” in the present article

is multifaceted. It embraces personal communication,

academic exchange. (face-to-face, print and online),

“imaginary dialogue” between partners separated by

spatial and temporal distance (as constructed by

scholars), and such non-verbal medium as music. The

emphasis on cross-cultural dialogue is in consonance

with the author’s specialization in Modern Languages

and Comparative Literature, as he refers to his

experience of publishing academic works in the West,

in Western languages and on Western subjects. It can

be observed that contributions of quality by non-native

speakers are recognized by native speakers, as may be

witnessed in the fields of German Studies and Thai

Studies, which have become “international” disciplines.

Case studies related to the author’s own research defy

the simplistic notion of immediate or short-term impact

either in the academic world or in society. Both

obsolescence and breakthrough are phenomena that

must be handled with extreme caution in the

humanities which operate on long-term assimilation

requiring meticulous analysis and deep reflection. The

author demonstrates this long-term process with the

case of the German Romantic thinker, critic and

scholar, August Wilhelm Schlegel, whose latest

“rebirth” is propelled by the monumental research

work of a British Germanist, who also draws

extensively on the present author’s monograph

published 51 years ago. The author concludes his

argument with a philosophical-cum-theological

proposition: a commitment to cross-cultural dialogue

is concomitant with the learning and mastery of foreign

languages, which may be interpreted as a liberation

(however partial) from “the Curse of Babel”

มโนทัศน์ที่ว่าด้วย “ทวิวัจน์” ในบทความนี้มีความ

หลากหลาย ซึ่งรวมถึงการสื่อสารกันในระดับบุคคล การ

แลกเปลี่ยนทางวิชาการ (ด้วยวิธีการ “มนุษย์สัมผัส

มนุษย์” ด้วยสิ่งพิมพ์ และด้วยกลไกของโลกเสมือน)

“ทวิวัจน์ในจินตนาการ” ระหว่างคู่สนทนาที่อยู่ห่างไกล

กันทั้งในมิติของสถานที่และเวลา และรวมไปถึงการใช้

สื่อที่มิใช่ภาษาเช่นดนตรี การเน้นทวิวัจน์ในลักษณะ

ข้ามวัฒนธรรมสอดคล้องกับความเชี่ยวชาญของผู้เขียน

เองในสาขาวิชาภาษาปัจจุบันและวรรณคดีเปรียบเทียบ

โดยที่ผู้เขียนอ้างถึงผลงานตีพิมพ์ของตนเองในประเทศ

ตะวันตกที่เขียนเป็นภาษาตะวันตกและมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยว

กับโลกตะวันตก เป็นที่สังเกตได้ว่างานวิชาการที่มี

คุณภาพซึ่งสร้างขึ้นโดยนักวิชาการต่างชาติก็ได้รับการ

ยอมรับจากเจ้าของวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกต้นก????ำเนิดเอง ดัง

ตัวอย่างที่เห็นได้จาก เยอรมันศึกษาและไทยศึกษา ซึ่ง

ถือได้ว่าเป็นวิทยาการที่มีความเป็นนานาชาติ กรณี

ศึกษาจากประสบการณ์ของผู้เขียนเป็นหลักฐานที่ค้าน

การด่วนสรุปว่า งานวิจัยจะต้องส่งผลกระทบได้ทันทีใน

ระยะเวลาอันสั้นทั้งในวงวิชาการและในสังคม การพูด

ถึงงานวิชาการว่า ตกยุคไปแล้ว หรือเป็นการค้นพบใหม่

สุด จะต้องกระท????ำด้วยความระมัดระวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งใน

กรอบของมนุษยศาสตร์ เพราะวิทยาการด้านนี้ด????ำเนิน

ไปได้ด้วยการซึมซับในระยะยาว ซึ่งเรียกร้องการ

วิเคราะห์อย่างละเอียดถี่ถ้วนและการครุ่นคิดพินิจนึกอัน

ลึกซึ้ง ผู้เขียนพิสูจน์แนวคิดที่ว่าด้วยกระบวนการที่ต้อง

ใช้เวลาที่ว่านี้ด้วยกรณีตัวอย่างของนักคิดนักวิจารณ์

และนักวิชาการยุคโรแมนติก เอากุสต์ วิลเฮล์ม ชเลเกล
